History of Dehradun

The name “Dehradun” has been derived from two words – Dera (meaning camp) and “Doon” (the valley where this place is located). It’s said that when Guru Ram Rai visited this place with his followers, he set up a camp here. The city also finds mention in the ancient Hindu epics, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

Dehradun flourished under the Garhwal Kingdom before the British transformed it into a prestigious cantonment town. This colonial era, from the early 19th century, endowed the city with its architectural heritage. Many renowned institutions, such as the Forest Research Institute (1906), the Indian Military Academy (1932), and Doon School (1935), are among the best tourist places in Dehradun.

In 2000, Dehradun became the capital of the newly formed state of Uttaranchal (carved out of Uttar Pradesh). The state was formally named Uttarakhand in 2007. Travel and tourism in Dehradun today is a beautiful mix of its colonial charm and modern development.
