History of Mindrolling Monastery Dehradun

Monasteries are an excellent place to train the monks' minds to be calm and quiet. It is also a place to learn Buddha's teachings and principles. So, the name Mindrolling is a little inappropriate for a monastery.

However, the twist lies in the name; everyone mispronounces it. According to the Tibetans, the actual pronunciation is said to be 'Min-drolling,' which means a place for perfect emancipation.' It makes sense now.

Rigzin Tendak Lingpa constructed this monastery in 1676. It was then re-established by Khochhen Rinpoche in 1965 with the help of fellow monks.

The main aim of the Buddha Temple Complex is to protect the cultural and religious understanding of the Nyingma School of Buddhism. This school is said to be one of the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Sakya, Kagyu, and Gelak are the names of the other schools.

The design and construction of the monastery took about three years to complete, and almost 50 artists were involved in constructing this magnificent building. Jetsun Mingyur Paldron had two sons and a daughter. He made sure he taught his sons and daughters the values and teachings of this monastery. The Nyingma scholars and yogis from all over Tibet studied at this monastic university for almost 300 years.

The monastery has witnessed and survived the biggest natural calamities and disasters. In 1718, the Dzungar Mongols from East Turkistan damaged the monastery, but it was reconstructed during the seventh Dalai Lama's time.

At 22, Khochhen Rinpoche came to India, exiled during the Communist regime in China. The initial idea of creating this monastery was to keep the traditions alive. In the ancient university, also known as the Nyingma College, the students were taught about the Buddhist scriptures, the Tibetan lunar calendar, medicine, calligraphy, and astronomy. Apart from that,13 foremost sutra and tantra texts are included in the curriculum too.
