Dehradun is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand. With several hill stations gracing its landscape, you can escape to any corner of the state, and its verdant beauty will enthrall you.

One such popular tourist destination near Dehradun is Kalsi.

Kalsi is a popular and beautiful town situated around 44 km from Dehradun city on the Dehradun-Chakrata Road in Uttarakhand. Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, this place is best known for the Rock edicts of Khalsi, a group of important and large inscriptions by emperor Ashoka. It is peaceful, soothing, and resonates with everyone who visits this small town.

Thousands of tourists from around the country come to the Kalsi village every year to enjoy the beauty and peace and to admire Ashoka's inscriptions. It is a splendid location to spend a short vacation and enjoy a few moments of calmness away from the city's noise.

All about Kalsi in Dehradun

The Kalsi town is known for its heritage significance and is the gateway to the tribal region of Jaunsar-Bawar in the district of Dehradun. The amazing Bourg of Kalsi, named after the rock edicts of Khalsi, inhabits people from different hilly communities, including Mundar, Khils, and Bhutis.

One of the major reasons to visit the Kalsi village is its historical importance, as it houses major inscriptions of Ashoka, the great Indian emperor of the Mauryan Empire.

There is a pear-shaped crystal rock that contains the inscription of the fourteenth edict of emperor Ashoka. It is written in Pali language with Brahmi script.

Ashoka's edict was built around 450 BC and is 10 ft. long and 8 ft. broad. It scripted Ashoka's humane nature after the war when he took up Buddhism and committed to restriction of war & non-violence.

#Trivia: The Archeological Department of India now preserves this rock edict of Kalsi. These inscriptions also mention the nature of Ashoka as a king and his efforts and concerns for the welfare of his people.

The names of five great Greek kings, including Antiochus, Antigonus, Ptolemy, Magas, and Alexander, can be found on the 13th edict of Ashoka's inscriptions. These kings were the recipients of Ashoka's teachings.
