About Tapkeshwar Temple

Tapkeshwar is said to be one of the most famous and popular sites in Dehradun. It is located 6.5 km away from the city center of Dehradun. The cave is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

#Trivia: The temple holds the occasional Tapkeshwar Mela every year.

History of Tapkeshwar Temple

As per the legend of the Mahabharata, Guru Dornacharya, the royal Guru of the Pandavas and Kauravas, was believed to have lived in the caves here. Therefore, the caves here are called Drona caves. When Dronacharya's wife gave birth to their son Ashwathama, she could not feed the child with her milk. Since Guru Dronacharya did not have the luxury to purchase a cow or cow's milk, Ashwathama prayed ardently to Lord Shiva. The child's dedication and devotion led Lord Shiva to bless him with the milk falling in the Drona caves.

The Tapkeshwar temple combines two words, 'Tapak,' which means 'drippy,' and 'Ishwar,' which means God. The dripping water droplets here create a serene environment.

You must climb a short trek to reach this place. The temple is home to two Shiva Lingas. Both the Shivalingas are entirely natural.

The Tapkeshwar Mela, or Tapkeshwar fair that takes place every year, usually happens during Shivaratri and has incredible religious importance. It is one of the main festivals for all the Shiva devotees and is celebrated with great pride.

Architecture of Tapkeshwar Temple

This place's architecture is typical Hindu style and is said to be a simple and small facade. The water droplets that fall from the ceiling surprisingly vanish from sight once they touch the Shivalinga, which is said to be seen a few yards away from the temple premises.

Best time to visit the Tapkeshwar Temple in Dehradun

While monsoons allow you to explore the lush greenery all around, it is also risky because of unexpected landslides. Thus, summer is the best time to visit Dehradun.
