About the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun

At one point, the Guinness Book of World Records recognised the structure as the world's most significant brick building. A prime example of architecture in the colonial style can be seen in the main structure, which serves as both the office and the museum.

Forestry research at the institution is made possible by a well-developed infrastructure, which includes a herbarium, library, arboreta, labs, a printing press, and experimental field sites. This institution is a deemed university home to six museums devoted to research and forestry.

These include the Social Forestry Museum, the Timber Museum, the Silviculture Museum, the NWFP Museum, and the Entomology and Pathology Museums. The building that houses the FRI is also home to a Botanical Museum, which has a wide variety of trees sourced from all corners of the globe.

The Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy is a prestigious study centre that can be found on the site of the Forest Research Institute. This academy is governed by the Indian Ministry of Environment and Forests (IMER).

History of Forest Research Institute Dehradun

Dietrich Brandis established the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in 1878. It was first known as the British Imperial Forest School. In 1906, it was restored as the Imperial Forest Research Institute, located at Chand Bagh on Mall Road. Chand Bagh is home to the famed Doon School.

In 1923, the institute stalwarts purchased a bigger campus at this site. After that, work on constructing the brand-new structures got underway. The primary structure, designed by CG Blomfield and completed in 1929, has a Greco-Roman architectural style. It is the place where most forest officers graduate from.

The best time to visit the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun is from March to June. It is neither too hot nor too cold and offers you a breath of fresh air, away from the hubbub of the city. The temperature varies from 17°C to 34°C.

Entry fee and timings of Forest Research Institute Dehradun

The FRI is open every day from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, except for officially recognised holidays. However, it is closed for lunch between 1:00 and 1:30 pm.

You can go on a guided tour twice daily, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm.

The admission fee is 20 INR per person, and you must purchase the tickets to the museum separately at the building's front desk. In addition, there is a parking charge of 30 INR.
