The temples in Dehradun are vital to the city's aesthetic appeal, attracting tourists and preserving its cultural legacy. They remain important to the local community and symbolise the city's long history and traditions.

One of these magnificent temples is the Santala Devi Temple, a centre of devotion for the followers and situated directly above the Nun Nadi in Dehradun.

About Santala Devi Temple

Santala Devi Temple is a popular Hindu shrine located on Santala Devi Hill near the city of Dehradun. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Santala Devi, who is believed to be an incarnation of the Hindu Goddess, Durga.

The temple is 2083 metres above sea level and surrounded by scenic natural beauty. It can be reached by climbing a flight of around 700 stairs that leads to the top of the hill. The climb can be strenuous, but the breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and valleys make it well worth the effort.

The temple is considered sacred by the locals, who believe that the goddess Santala Devi blesses her devotees with good health, wealth, and prosperity. The idol of the goddess is adorned with beautiful clothes and jewellery and is worshipped with great devotion by the devotees.

History of Santala Devi Temple

According to the legend, Princess Santala, the daughter of a king from Nepal, sought refuge in Dehradun to escape the unwanted advances of a Mughal king who wanted to marry her. She lived in Dehradun with her brother Santaur Singh, but the Mughals eventually caught up with them and attacked.

Despite their bravery, Santala Devi and her brother realized they couldn't win against the Mughals and surrendered to pray for salvation. Then, a bright light shone, turning the siblings into stone idols and reportedly blinding the Mughal soldiers. The temple was built on this site and has since become a renowned landmark in Dehradun.

Entry fee and timings of Santala Devi Temple
