Dehradun is one of Uttarakhand's most popular tourist destinations and also the capital of this hilly state. From waterfalls to monasteries, it is a place where you can relax your mind and enjoy some quiet time with your family and friends.

Of all the places to visit in Dehradun, Sakya Centre Buddhist Monastery is one of the most prominent and worth visiting at least once.

#Quicknote: Monastery is a community or a group of men or women, also known as monks or nuns, who have decided to give up worldly pleasures and pursue a spiritual journey.

About the Sakya Buddhist Monastery

This Buddhist Monastery is on Rajpur Road, Krishnapur, Dehradun, India. Sakya monastery, also known as Pel Sakya, is based on Tibetan Buddhism. It is a great place where you can learn from qualified Tibetan lamas. This intricately decorated building is an exquisite example of a Tibetan Buddhist shrine.

The Monastery is a community of monks with various levels of experience in the Buddhist tradition. The whole idea of taking your time to visit a monastery is to share and understand the culture and lifestyle of monks who primarily live in the Monastery. Promoting Buddhist teachings and spiritual practices is the primary goal of this Monastery. Sakya Centre Buddhist Monastery also provides various educational classes to make people, especially tourists like us, understand the teachings of Buddha.

The building is Japanese-style architecture with a 360-degree view of the Dehradun valley. It holds the beautiful stupa, which is around 220 feet high. You can learn more about Tibetan culture by carrying a book or two from their in-house bookshop or a small souvenir to recall your visit.

History of Sakya Buddhist Monastery

Initially founded by His Holiness Jigdal Dagchen Sakya (1929-2016) and His Eminence Dezhung Rinpoche, the Sakya Monastery mainly focuses on the principles of Buddha and Tibetan traditions.

The name 'Sakya' is derived from Rinpoche's family name and their spiritual legacy. The name means it was constructed on a patch of earth (sa) that was pale (kya).

#Trivia: It is said that the very first Monastery was built in 1073 in Tibet.

The Monastery has done some incredible work for people in need, and one among them is the Virupa Educational Institute (VEI), which was developed to add value through education. The 130-feet statue of Buddha dedicated to the Dalai Lama is truly a cherry on top of the cake.
