One of the famous tourist spots in Dehradun city is the Clock Tower, also known as Ghanta Ghar locally. It is a large and iconic building with six clocks installed on different sides and is majorly used as a landmark.

Inaugurated in 1953, the Clock Tower is one of the oldest buildings in the city. A closer peek will make you see the names of Dehradun's freedom fighters engraved on its surface. It is an unmissable part of the tourist spots in Dehradun and is best visited during the day.

History of Ghanta Ghar in Dehradun

The Ghanta Ghar was inaugurated in 1953 by Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, the Indian Railways Minister. It lies in the city center with shops laden throughout the area.

The tower was built in memory of resident Lala Balbir Singh. His son, Sher Singh, was the one to name it the Balbir Clock Tower. The tower's construction started on the 24th of July 1948, and the foundation stone was laid by Sarojini Naidu, the then Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

The total construction cost of the Clock Tower was around Rs.1.5 lakhs, and the clock was specially imported from Switzerland. You can now imagine the historical significance of the clock tower in Dehradun.

Architecture of Ghanta Ghar in Dehradun

The Clock Tower of Dehradun is a hexagonal building with one clock on its six sides. The clock tower is around 85 meters high, and the chimes of the huge clocks on it echo through the city lanes even today. Though the original clocks stopped functioning around ten years ago, they have been replaced by new clocks as per the reports of Dehradun Municipal Corporation.

The clock tower is a subtle reminder of all the freedom fighters who lost their lives fighting for our independence. It also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Lala Balbir Singh and how the city has evolved. The golden plate at the tower has all the names engraved beautifully on it.
