Once a quiet town, Dehradun has become one of Uttarakhand's most popular tourist destinations today. It is not only the capital city of this beautiful state but also one that is layered with history and mythological evidence to make every tourist look this way.

From the glowing campuses of different schools to the gorgeous locales that speak nothing but the language of serenity, Dehradun is home to one of the most cherished monuments, too- The Khalanga War Memorial.

In the brave memory of Gorkha soldiers, it is the world's first-ever monument built by their opponents in the war. Britishers built Khalanga War Memorial to honour the Gorkha soldiers who fought the 1814-16 war. Britishers were impressed by the courage, fearlessness, and resilience of the Gorkha regiment, which resulted in the creation of the war memorial.

The war memorial falls under the Archaeological Survey of India. It is known for the courage and resilience shown by Gorkha soldiers during the battle of Nalapani between Gorkha soldiers and Britishers in October 1814.

About Khalanga War Memorial

The Khalanga War Memorial is among the most popular tourist sites in Dehradun. It is nearly 6 kilometres from the main city centre. Dedicated to the brave Gorkha soldiers, it is among India's most significant heritage monuments.

Also known as Kalinga War Memorial locally, it is the world's first and only memorial built by an army of Britishers for their opponents in a war. Along with its historical importance, the greenery and scenic beauty around the monument plays a huge role in making it one of Dehradun's most visited tourist places.

#Trivia: Khalanga War Memorial is fondly called Kalinga or Kalinga war memorial.

The bravery of Gorkha soldiers can be remembered when only 600 Gorkhas and their families fought with an army of over 3500 Britishers with 10 cannons and defended their Kangra fort.

It was in October 1814 when the British army marched towards Dehradun to occupy Nepali territory. It was situated between two major rivers, Ganga, and the Yamuna, in Garhwal and Kumaon region, occupied by Nepali forces. A battle took place between Britishers and Nepali forces at Nalapani on 10th October 1814.

In this war, the Britishers were defeated and withdrew back to Dehradun. After a couple of days, they fought another battle on 31st October 1814, resulting in the Britishers' defeat.

The siege continued for a month, and then Britishers blocked water sources to gain control of the territory and succeeded. This water blockage continued for months. In November 1814, when Nepali forces died slowly because of thirst, Britishers attacked the fort and gained control of the Kangra fort.

#Trivia: It was later known as Anglo-Nepalese, Anglo-Gorkha or Gorkha's war.
